WINNING HONORABLE MENTION IN INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION

“STACKING WITH VOIDS”

Student Housing or Hostels, generally are monotonous buildings with series of rooms having lengthy and narrow corridors.
Idea behind the design is to gives an energetic environment with punctures at various points of the building acting as breathing spaces. Three housing unit have been developed which are stacked upon each other in ‘Tetris’ arrangements. These stacking and punctures, toghether gives ample spaces for landscape and balconies.
Instead of lengthy corridor with room on both sides, 7 meters wide corridor has been given having open to sky atrium in between. Common informal sitout space (3m x 4m) has been designed along these corridors.
These landscaped voids and open to sky atrium helps to channelize the flow of wind. It allows the cool wind to travel through the voids and let the warm wind escape from the open to sky atrium.
